2016 Didn’t Suck

2016 didn't suck for me. I met you and fell for you. Now I'm happy as can be.   Oh, I ran a marathon too. At work I got a new position. It's hard to be blue.   We Run Big D has lots of new additions. And I got a new place. Let me…Read more 2016 Didn’t Suck

Brunch

"Hey, remember Nick?" Kelsey looked over at her friend as she took a sip from her drink. "The basketball player, right?" Daniel's eyes rolled up and to the right, his memory working hard. "Yeah yeah, he was a freaking star. I only hung out with him like once, but he was pretty cool." "Yeah. He…Read more Brunch

That Time I Took Adderall

It was my last semester of university. I was proud of myself. I had gone my whole life without ever taking academic performance enhancing drugs. I knew friends with prescriptions. I could have gotten them if I wanted for a small price. But I never did. And then, with the end literally right around the…Read more That Time I Took Adderall

November Project Pledge

Once again, I've let life get the best of me. I haven't written in a while. But this time I have a better excuse! I have been L-I-V-I-N!! I love my job. I love the city. And I love my life. Outside of work I have recently decided to volunteer at the Humane Society. There…Read more November Project Pledge

Wop? You mean, Watt?

You can't deny, J.J. Watt is the shit right now. He's Houston's best defensive player, and arguably one of our best offensive players with three touchdowns this season. The man is earning his pay check. And have you seen his commercials? He's funny. Have you seen what he does for the community? He's charitable. He…Read more Wop? You mean, Watt?

The World Needs More People Like You

The world needs more people like you, Colbie Caillat.  Most people recognize her from her hit, "Bubbly." But recently she's done something that should start a new trend. She completely reversed the makeup process for several women in her video, "Try", along with herself! And I don't mean she just made some half-assed attempt to…Read more The World Needs More People Like You

Maleficent the Magnificent

I have never been a fan of Angelina Jolie. Personally I always disliked her after the whole love triangle with Brad and Jen. And I thought Tomb Raider was overrated. Whatever. I have to respect her acting in the new film Maleficent, a  new take on the classic Sleeping Beauty, which was a take on Little Briar…Read more Maleficent the Magnificent

Locked Up and Under the Radar

As most of you know, the second season of Orange is the New Black is now available on Netflix for your viewing pleasure. It was based off of Piper Kerman's memoir and her time in prison. In case you have been living under a rock, or at least without access to Netflix, I highly recommend…Read more Locked Up and Under the Radar

Dear Forbes: This Is Why Iggy Azalea Doesn’t “Run” Hip-Hop

Olivia A. Cole

Image

The Internet is currently on fire following a piece on Forbes that was initially titled “Hip Hop Is Run By A White, Blonde, Australian Woman” but was changed after the backlash forced Forbes to realize what an absurd claim they were making. The new title is “Hip Hop’s Unlikely New Star: A White, Blonde, Australian Woman.”

I’m annoyed for multiple reasons. Let’s discuss them, shall we?

First off, I wouldn’t go to an Iggy Azalea concert if it were happening on my front porch. While I understand (somewhat confusedly) that she does have something of a fan base, anyone who has any love for hip-hop is currently decrying the notion that this woman “runs” hip-hop. Or anything at all, really. But that’s why the article title was changed, right? Because it (as the update reads) “did not accurately reflect the content of the piece.” Nor does it…

Dear Class of 2014

Y'all know as well as I do that we aren't ready for the real world. We may or may not want to leave our respective schools. Though let's be honest, it's not really school we're going to miss. It's the people. The parties. The bars. The late night conversations with friends. Those random road trips…Read more Dear Class of 2014

…But why writing?

As graduation creeps up on me, everyone always asks the same question, "So what are you doing after graduation?" Or something along those lines. I always have the same answer. "Hopefully get a job." But it's more than just a paycheck I want. I want to write. I really do. This blog by Andrew Toy…Read more …But why writing?

Small Actions, Big Differences

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihoR9B7p-1Q Harish Manwani gave this excellent TED Talk about business models. Not many people find business interesting, but I think this notion that profit is not always the point is very interesting. After working in retail, I've become a lot more cognizant of different businesses and what they're doing for the consumer. I've realized that…Read more Small Actions, Big Differences

What I’ve Learned Outside the College Classroom

So I'm actually supposed to make a blog for one of my classes. How convenient. I've decided to make a list of stuff I've learned about myself and my generation in college, but not actually in a classroom or from a book. 1. Millennials love lists. Especially about themselves (which brings me to number 2).…Read more What I’ve Learned Outside the College Classroom

My 20s (The Asshole Years)

I’m grateful to have read this now while I still have some of my 20’s left.

Mended Musings

your 20s

I have two younger brothers in their 20’s. The older of the two is turning 29 this year and in honor of his last year as a twenty-something, I’m sharing my take on this important decade.

Dear Brothers,
When I was in my 20’s I was a real asshole, as was just about everyone I’ve ever known who passed through that decade. I’m not at all saying that you two specifically are assholes and I don’t mean to offend anyone reading this. Every decade that we have the honor of living gets summed up with the virtue of hindsight and I like to refer to my 20’s as The Asshole Years. I use the word as a way to describe how people in their 20’s are sometimes perceived and if we’re lucky enough to be over 30, we were assholes too (and might still be). These are my experiences and…
